A key role in the retail mall management world is the Mall Manager. Our client was having mixed success in the identification and selection of appropriate candidates for this position. They had trouble filling positions in a timely way, and were faced with having to manage difficult performance issues that arose for those individuals who were brought on board but found to be unsuitable. We worked with the client to more clearly outline the criteria for success in this key role, and then became an integral part of helping them assess candidate suitability and potential for advancement.
The LSI Approach:
- Developed a competency model outlining key skills and behaviors for success in the role;
- Conducted comprehensive individual assessments on all final candidates (done on an ongoing basis as new openings need to be filled);
- Provided written and verbal feedback to the organization about each candidate, including discussion of the risks and benefits of hiring the individual into the organization.
As a result of our work, the client has experienced a much higher degree of success with its candidates, bringing on only those that clearly meet the criteria outlined for effectiveness in the job. They have not only experienced stronger performance in job incumbents, but also less turnover. Additionally, the more rigorous approach has allowed the client to grow the talent pipeline by bringing on individuals who have longer term potential for advancement.
